Breaking News: New Guidance for Managing MPX in Non-Hospital Settings

Latest Update from the CDC

Key Points:

  • Patients with mild uncomplicated MPX should be managed in non-hospital settings.
  • Antivirals and vaccinia immune globulin are recommended for some patients.
  • The CDC has updated its dosing recommendations for tecovirimat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued new guidance for managing patients with suspected or confirmed monkeypox (MPX) in non-hospital settings. The guidance recommends that patients with mild uncomplicated disease and who are not at high risk for severe illness be managed at home or in an outpatient clinic.

The CDC also recommends that certain patients receive antiviral medications, such as tecovirimat, brincidofovir, and cidofovir, or vaccinia immune globulin (VIG). These treatments are recommended for patients who are at high risk for severe illness, such as those with weakened immune systems or pregnant women.

The CDC has updated its dosing recommendations for tecovirimat. The recommended dose for the treatment of smallpox in humans is now 600 mg twice daily.

The CDC is continuing to monitor the MPX outbreak and will provide updates as needed. For more information, please visit the CDC website.
